Tidal: A game changer for the music industry?

You may have recently seen blue profile pictures and #TIDALForALL. The hype is around Tidal, a high fidelity music streaming service, which was recently brought by Jay-Z in January for $56 million. I tested the streaming service Tidal back in December after writing this article on the quality of the music we listen to.

The live event was pretty short and sweet, the ‘founders’ (listed below) held a press conference in which they came together to sign a contract and re-launch Tidal. There were rumours of a new album release from the likes of Rihanna or Jay-Z but nothing came through.

The Distortion of Sound

This is a short star-studded documentary put together by artist within the music industry chatting about the quality of music. The documentary focuses on “how technology has changed the way we listen to music.”

So MP3 changed it all. The revolution of music compression has allowed us to fit thousands of songs into our pockets. MP3’s were both a blessing and a curse making it more convenient than ever to listen to music on the go. This comes at a price in lack of audio quality. Compression works by removing the “unnecessary” parts of the audio and leaves the brain to fill in the rest.
